{"id":46196,"date":"2022-11-21T15:18:59","date_gmt":"2022-11-21T20:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/?p=46196"},"modified":"2022-11-21T15:27:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T20:27:58","slug":"blue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/blue\/","title":{"rendered":"Husky with Special Needs Gets a Second Chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blue was just a young husky pup when he was surrendered to Second Chance by a local animal control officer.\u00a0 He was clearly uncomfortable and pawing at his red eyes. \u00a0Upon closer examination, our vets found he had limited to no vision, possibly from birth.\u00a0 He needed to start daily eye medication right away and needed an experienced foster so he could begin treatment.\u00a0 Thankfully Second Chance works with many rescue groups.\u00a0 A contact that had worked with a husky rescue for years was able to temporarily foster this pup and helped find a long term foster while Blue&#8217;s medical needs were addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Blue found a true champion when he met his foster.\u00a0 She had adopted rescue huskies for many years, most had been abused or neglected. She\u2019d never had a blind dog before, but she was determined to help Blue and did some quick research.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46198\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46198\" class=\"wp-image-46198 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Blue-Eye-Drop-Time-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Blue-Eye-Drop-Time-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Blue-Eye-Drop-Time-38x50.jpg 38w, https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Blue-Eye-Drop-Time-50x67.jpg 50w, https:\/\/www.secondchanceanimals.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Blue-Eye-Drop-Time-rotated.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-46198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eye drop time for Blue<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She ordered blind toys like meat scented fetching balls &amp; squeaky toys and also ordered a scent kit to put certain scents with certain things.\u00a0 The food and water bowls got one scent, dangerous areas like stairs got another scent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMostly, it was just spending time with him and teaching him that when I say, \u201cwait,\u201d he needs to stop until I say something else.\u00a0 I.E.- I say, \u201cwait\u201d at the top of the stairs, and then I say, \u201cstep\u201d for each stair he needs to walk down.\u00a0 In all honesty, he figured out my house and yard very quickly based upon his own trial &amp; error.\u00a0 The eye doctor said he\u2019s very adaptable because he\u2019s been blind for most of his life.\u00a0 I really thought he\u2019d require much more work.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s smart and sweet.\u00a0 The real secret for Blue was the same as every husky, daily exercise.\u00a0 Our beach walk keeps him very satisfied for the rest of the day.
